Spring Pest Activity Across Western & South-West Sydney

Every spring the same call comes in: ants overnight, webs on the eaves, wasps at the back door. Here's why it happens all at once, and how to get ahead of it.

Warmer soil temperatures restart breeding cycles that have been idle all winter. In Western and South-West Sydney that shift usually lands in the first fortnight of September, and it hits every pest group at once.

01

Ants come first

Black house ants and coastal brown ants move nests toward warmth and moisture, which is why trails appear along kitchen benches and bathroom silicone before you see anything outside. Surface sprays from the supermarket scatter the colony and make it harder to treat properly.

A transfer-based treatment works differently: workers carry the active back to the nest, so the colony collapses instead of relocating three metres to the left.

02

Then spiders and wasps

Webbing spiders build on eaves, window frames and pergolas as insect numbers climb. Redbacks favour letterboxes, outdoor furniture undersides and kids' play equipment, the places nobody looks until someone gets bitten.

Paper wasps start small nests under gutters and entry awnings in early spring. Treated in October, it is a five-minute job. Left to February, it is a nest the size of a dinner plate over your front door.

03

Cockroaches follow the heat

Australian and smoky-brown cockroaches breed in garden beds, pits and roof voids, then come inside through weep holes and roof penetrations. German cockroaches are different, they are an indoor, kitchen-based problem and need gel baiting plus a growth regulator, not a perimeter spray.

Quick takeaways

  • Book spring treatments before mid-September, not after the first sighting
  • Perimeter, roof void and garden edges matter more than indoor spraying
  • Redback checks around play equipment are worth doing every spring
  • German cockroaches need gel baiting, not a general spray
